This is a system of brass pulleys threaded with brass braid that allows the ship to be piloted automatically once set. The other end is attached to the boom where it can be adjusted for starboard or port turning. A good view of the dead eye detail is seen here. Each one is secured to a ring on the deck and hand wrapped on both ends. The dead eye on top is attached to the standing rigging. The two are laced together to the exact tension to ensure the masts are straight on all sides.
