The next evolution to the Fletcher Class was the Sumner Class Destroyers reflecting the increased need for Anti-Aircraft Warfare defense. Often referred to as "short-hulls" as the subsequent Gearing Class were essentially the same except for a 14' extension in the middle of the hull for larger fuel capacity.

Of the seventy Sumner Class Destroyers, only five were lost to enemy action though many more were damaged and returned to service. Twelve were eventually converted for mine-laying duty. A few still operate today in the service of foreign navies.

Numerous modifications to the weapons and on board electronics improved her performance as the years passed.
 

Improved surface and air search radars, ECM equipment, fixed and directable hedgehog launchers, new torpedoes and torpedo launching systems, DASH, fixed and variable depth sonar systems were added extending the service life of Sumner Destroyers well past original expectations.

The second USS Barton (DD-722) was launched in October of 1943. She served proudly receiving the Navy Unit Commendation for services rendered during the Okinawa operation and six battle stars for her WWII service as well as one battle star for Korea.

Mounted in a custom case, standard wood is Red Oak as shown here. We use a variety of different woods for our bases which are sealed and finished in numerous coats of natural hand rubbed fine oil to a radiant luster.
 

Includes a brass nameplate and clear acrylic protective dust cover to ensure the long term integrity of this beautiful work of art.
